The minds behind the machine
If you’re considering a new side-by-side, it’s about more than shopping a spec sheet. It’s about imagining real days in the seat. Early mornings. Long miles. How it will feel after a hard day’s work, and whether it will still feel solid a year from now, and 10 years after that.
For this vehicle to feel solid a decade down the road, it starts with the people behind it. And Matt Alexander is the leader of those people.
A Honda career built from the ground up
Matt’s story at Honda starts where many do: engineering.
“I started at Honda about 25 years ago as a test engineer,” he says.
Over time, he moved through testing, design, and project management. That progression matters because side-by-sides aren’t built in one department. They’re built through constant collaboration, problem-solving, and refinement. Matt has lived those handoffs firsthand, which gives him a clear view of how the pieces connect and how early decisions show up later in the real world.
The passion was there before the job
Long before the title, Matt was an off-road guy.
“I always had a passion for off-road products,” he says, “whether that be mountain biking, or hiking, or camping, just a big sense for the outdoor scene.”
Some of his earliest Honda memories are familiar to anyone who grew up around machines. “One of my first Honda experiences was with my friend’s ATC90,” Matt says. “My parents wouldn’t let me have an ATV or motorcycle, but my friend had one, and we would race that around, and set up time trials.”
Then came the reliability that made Honda feel different. “My first car was actually a 1996 Honda Accord. That thing ran forever,” he says. “I think I put over 400,000 miles on it, and that quality stuck with me. That was one of the reasons I wanted to come work at Honda.”
And 25 years later, he doesn’t hesitate when he says, “It’s been one of the best decisions of my life.”
What a Large Project Leader really does
Today, Matt’s role as the Large Project Leader, or LPL, puts him at the center of everything Pioneer 1000. At Honda, that means you’re there before there’s even a sketch, and you stay with the project until it’s on sale.
“We start with a new model, all the way from the planning, before we even make the sketch of what we want to do. And then, as it goes, I stay with the project, all the way to the end,” Matt explains.
In other words, planning, design, testing, manufacturing readiness, and launch are all part of his lane. “It’s a really unique role where you get to experience all the joys of working at Honda, from creating all the way to selling,” he adds.
