The beginning

From the outset, Honda has been at the forefront of the ATV revolution. Known for its groundbreaking innovations and unmatched reliability, Big Red’s pursuit of rider-centered design has continuously redefined the ATV experience. From the pioneering three-wheelers that set the stage to today’s advanced industry-leading four-wheelers, these machines are more than just vehicles – they’re trusted companions, built for every adventure, journey, and job.

Birth of the ATV

In the late 1960s, after achieving immense success with its innovative motorcycles, Honda set out to expand its product line. This led to the idea of creating a small, lightweight vehicle capable of handling rugged terrains without requiring the balance of a motorcycle. Engineers envisioned a versatile machine for recreation, agriculture, and transport – areas where the bulky utility vehicles of the time often struggled.

The result was the US90, introduced in 1970 and later renamed the ATC90. This three-wheeled machine was revolutionary, featuring fat balloon tires and a lightweight design that allowed it to float over sand, mud, and snow – where traditional vehicles would often bog down. The ATC90 quickly gained a dedicated following, particularly among U.S. off-road enthusiasts.

Honda’s bold decision to utilize a three-wheel design enabled the ATC90’s unique simplicity and agility, making it highly capable across various terrains for both recreational and practical applications. However, as the popularity of the ATC90 grew, awareness of the stability challenges inherent to three-wheeled designs also rose. The nimbleness that made riding trails so thrilling also posed certain tipping risks.

The shift to four wheels

By the early 1980s, the limitations of the three-wheeled design – particularly regarding stability – became clear. Despite Honda’s efforts to improve this with wider rear axles and lower center-of-gravity configurations, three-wheelers were still prone to tipping, especially under aggressive handling or by inexperienced riders. Staying true to its commitment to safety and innovation, Honda led the way toward four-wheeled ATVs.

In 1984, Honda introduced the TRX200, the industry’s first four-wheel ATV. This shift marked a pivotal moment in ATV history, with the four-wheeled design dramatically enhancing stability and control. The TRX200’s robust single-cylinder four-stroke engine, electric start, reverse gear, and front and rear racks made it an invaluable tool for countless tasks. Its instant popularity spurred the rapid development of a full line of four-wheel ATVs.

By 1986, Honda launched the FourTrax series with two key models: the rugged FourTrax 4x4 (TRX350), designed for demanding tasks like farming and hunting, and the sportier FourTrax 250R (TRX250R), built for racing and pure recreation. Through the early 1990s, the FourTrax family continued to grow, catering to diverse needs and solidifying Honda’s position as the leader in the ATV market – setting a new standard for competitors to follow.

Technological advancements

As Honda refined its ATV lineup, it became evident that innovation in engineering was driving its success. Known for pioneering advancements in engine, transmission, and suspension technologies, Honda continued to push the envelope on performance and reliability. One notable innovation was Honda’s longitudinally mounted engine, which enhanced efficiency by delivering power directly to the wheels. Now a hallmark across Honda’s ATV lineup, this design optimizes both performance and durability. Honda also transformed suspension with fully independent systems for a smoother ride over rough terrain and introduced automatic push-button transmissions that make shifting more intuitive and accessible.

Durability remains central to Honda’s engineering approach. Every Honda ATV is designed to withstand extreme conditions, incorporating features like reinforced steel frames and weather-resistant electrical systems. With the addition of Honda’s Pro-Connect cargo system, versatility has been further enhanced, making Honda ATVs equally dependable for work and play.
