WORCS
Round 10: Pismo Beach, CA
October 21, 2007
The Pismo Beach round of the WORCS championship is easily the most unique and spectacular race of the series. The exhausting 7.5-mile deep-sand course is laid out entirely in the famous dunes located on California's central coast, where off-road bikes, ATVs and dune buggies cavort during the summer months.
The motorcycle and ATV classes run simultaneously, as the two courses are marked off directly adjacent to each other, a format that proved popular with the 15,000-plus spectators lining the outside perimeter of the event.
American Honda CRF450R rider Robby Bell was still recovering from the brutal 24 hours Glen Helen. And to add insult to injury, he was fighting off the flu this weekend. He got off to a rough start, losing time while avoiding a crash with Nathan Woods, the current second-place points holder. Robby brought his CRF450R around in tenth after the first lap, and as the relentless sand took its toll on teams that were less prepared, Bell moved up steadily to fourth by the one-hour mark. But the flu is a tough customer, and Robby eventually fell back one spot but kept fighting, finishing fifth at the checkered flag.
Series points leader Kurt Caselli dropped out of the race on lap two with a blown motor, and that puts Bell back into the hunt for the overall series crown. With just one round remaining, the WORCS championship will come down to the last race: The three-way fight for the championship will be decided in Taft, CA on November 4th.
