Honda machines are renowned for their durability and reliability, so you can count on years of hassle-free fun from them. Still, off-road riding is tough on a motorcycle or ATV, so it’s always helpful to conduct both a pre- and post-ride inspection (and then whatever necessary TLC) to keep your CRF, TRX or FourTrax in top operating condition. Your motorcycle’s or ATV’s Owner’s Manual will help you become more familiar with basic maintenance, as will the following tips.

  • Tires Check for recommended air pressure (see your Owner’s Manual), and inspect for cuts, excessive wear or other damage.
  • Wheels. Make sure axle nuts are tight, and check rims for deformation and broken or loose spokes.
  • Brakes and clutch. Check for smooth operation and proper adjustment/positioning.
  • Gearshift lever. Be sure it's securely attached and positioned for safe, proper shifting.
  • Cables and controls. Make sure the throttle and all control cables (brakes, clutch, engine stop, lights) operate smoothly.
  • Fuel. Make sure your gas is topped off before taking off. Post-ride, turn your fuel petcock to the OFF position before putting your machine away.
  • Oil. Ditto for your engine oil. Make sure it’s filled to the recommended level. Also, check your Owner’s or Service Manual for how often you should change your oil and oil filter.
  • Chain and chassis. Inspect your chain guide and chain rollers, along with your chain, for proper adjustment (too loose? too tight? just right?) and lubrication. Also check for wear and any loose nuts or bolts in hard parts like the frame, swingarm and suspension.
  • Suspension. Check for smooth operation over the suspension's full range of travel. And, if needed or desired, adjust suspension damping (preload, compression and/or rebound on certain models) to the individual rider and/or trail conditions.
  • Air filter. Remove and clean your air filter after each ride, particularly if you’ve been in dusty or sandy conditions. Your Owner’s or Service Manual will have complete step-by-step instructions.
