Colton Rider Education Center FAQs

Street

  • Will I receive my M1(motorcycle license) by completing this course?

Course completion requires attendance at all sessions, passing of a written test, and passing a riding skills test. Upon successful completion of the Basic RiderCourse, students are given a Certificate of Completion of Motorcycle Training (DL389).

  • How long is the course?

It's approximately 15 hours long (5 hours of classroom and 10 hours of hands-on practice). Courses are two days, or three weeknights.

  • What if I have never ridden a street motorcycle before?

Balance on a bicycle is highly encouraged before you take any motorcycle training program. We encourage you to take the Dirt Bike School before taking the Basic RiderCourse (BRC). You will learn how to shift, balance, maneuver, and stop a motorcycle, to help keep you safe. This will prove to be a great asset as a prelude to the Basic RiderCourse (BRC).

  • Will you teach me how to ride a motorcycle?

The Basic RiderCourse (BRC) is not designed to teach individuals "how" to ride. It simply provides an opportunity to discover if motorcycling is for you.

  • Am I guaranteed to pass?

There is no guarantee you will successfully complete the course, or be allowed to complete should safety and/or motorcycle control become an issue. There are no refunds once you begin the course. The BRC provides fundamentals for safe and responsible riding practice. RiderCoaches will do their best to coach you towards success. However, not everyone who enrolls is ready to ride. Enrollment is no guarantee of success.

  • How come it is cheaper for students under 21 years old?

Because all riders in California under 21 years of age must successfully complete this course in order to obtain a motorcycle license or endorsement.

  • What kind of bikes do you supply?

    Honda's CB 250cc Nighthawks, Rebel 250cc, CRF 230L, Metros (50cc) and Ruckus (50cc, 80cc & 250cc) Scooters.

  • Do I get a lunch break?

You do get about an hour lunch break. You are encouraged to bring a lunch or there are several fast food restaurants in the area nearby. We only provide drinking water.

  • Do I get my DMV completion certificate the day that I complete and pass the class?

You should receive the Certificate of Completion of Motorcycle Training (DL389) within 7 to 10 working days after you've completed the course.

  • What if I fail?

You will be given a second opportunity to repeat the course, if needed. If additional riding practice is needed thereafter, it is available for $25.00 per session.

  • Do I have to take the test at the DMV?

Upon completion, this class eliminates the need to take the DMV's skills test but you will still need to take the DMV's written test, if not done before taking this course.

  • Can I use my own bike for the class?

No you cannot use your own bike for the Basic RiderCourse (BRC). Only the Experienced RiderCourse (ERC) allows you to use your own motorcycle.

  • How much is it to borrow a helmet?

There is no charge to borrow a loan helmet. We do hold your driver's license, and it will be returned upon turning in the loaned helmet.

  • Do you have scooters?

    Yes - Metros (50cc) and Ruckus (50cc, 80cc & 250cc) Scooters.

  • Do you cancel a class if it rains?

Generally it is rain or shine. It is wise to call under extreme storm conditions. If class is cancelled, we will give as much notice as possible.

Dirt

  • How long is the course?

The Dirt Bike School is approximately 4 ½ to 5 hours long.

  • Can I bring my own bike and/or equipment?

You cannot bring your own bike. You are required to use one of our 2009 CRF line of bike sizes 50cc thru 230cc. Clutch bikes start at 80cc. We also provide FOX safety apparel (boots, helmet, pants, jersey, knee and elbow guards, gloves, chest protector) and Scott goggles, but you can bring your own if you like. We will supply anything that is needed to fill in.

  • Will you teach me how to ride a motorcycle?

Balance on a bicycle is highly encouraged before you take any motorcycle training program. Our MSF Certified Dirt Bike coaches are some of the most experienced, knowledgeable, and friendly coaches in the country! While we cannot guarantee that you will be able to master the skills needed to ride a dirt bike, it's our hope that by presenting the fundamental skills needed you will be successful at riding. You will learn how to shift, balance, maneuver, and stop a motorcycle, to help keep you safe.

  • What are the age restrictions?

Six years old and above. A child must be six years old the day of class and must be able to ride a bicycle without training wheels.

  • Are parents allowed to stay and watch?

We encourage parents to stay and watch what their child is learning to re-enforce the skills learned at a later time. In the interest of class safety, we ask that parents do not interfere with coaching by attempting to offer instructions to their children from the sidelines. Simultaneous instruction from parents and coaches during a class is confusing for the students, and does not create a safe learning environment. For the safety of all the students, parents interrupting the class in any way will be required to leave the range. Note: Children under 12 years old require a legal guardian to be present at all times.

  • Do you have a lunch break?

Yes, we usually give at least a 45 min. to an hour lunch break. You are encouraged to bring a lunch or there are several fast food restaurants in the area nearby. We only provide drinking water.

  • Can we have the whole family in the same class?

You can if you elect to do a family class which allows you to have up to five family members in the same class.

Otherwise classes are set up by age groups:

    • 6-11 yrs. (Kids class): max. 4 students
    • 12-15yrs. (Young Adults class): max 6 students
    • 16 yrs and up (Adult class): max 8 students

We also offer Private classes with maximum of two students in the class.

  • Do I need a Dirt Bike certificate to ride in California?

No, a MSF Dirt Bike School certificate is not needed in the state of California to go off-road riding. But we highly recommend taking a training course before you go riding for the first time. Even if you have some experience, you will still learn a lot of advance and needed techniques in dirt bike riding which will hopefully minimized chance of injury and enhance your enjoyment while riding.

  • Can we video tape or take photos of the class?

Yes, you are welcome to video tape or take photos as long as you do not interfere with the instruction or flow of the class.

  • Is there a more advanced course available?

Call for information and/ or availability.
