The 66th annual Monster Energy FIM Motocross of Nations was hosted this past weekend in Lommel, Belgium, where GEICO Honda’s Justin Barcia took on the deep, sandy conditions aboard his Team Honda Muscle Milk CRF450R to help earn a third-place overall finish for Team USA. After a tough qualifying session for Barcia in the MX3 class on Saturday, he put together an exceptional ride during his second race on Sunday, bringing Team USA their best individual result of the day with a third place.
“This was a crazy experience and I really learned a lot,” Barcia said. “Even though I am a good sand rider, the track was really challenging and rough; we don’t have anything like that here. In my first race I got a decent start but I came together with another rider. My spokes got twisted in his wheel and towards the end of the race my front end locked up, forcing me into the mechanics area. So I finished in 14th. In my second moto things went much better. I got a really good start and was able to keep it together to finish third. I am a little disappointed because obviously we wanted to win but overall I gave it everything I had and hopefully I will get selected to race for Team USA again.”
“Besides a few mistakes, Justin rode really well and was able to bring Team USA its best finish of the day,” said Team Honda Muscle Milk manager Erik Kehoe. “The track was gnarly and definitely a challenge for the guys on race day, but all things considered, it went well for us and we were able to bring home a third-place overall finish.”
